Sighs of relief and a round of applause could be heard after controversial plans to replace a windfarm were refused. The decision was made yesterday at the Coronation Hall in Ulverston by South Lakeland District Council’s planning committee. The meeting, which started at 10am, welcomed a full house. RWE Innogy wanted to replace 12 existing structures near the southern boundary of the Lake District national park with six much larger ones. But South Lakeland District Council rejected the bid. The 12 turbines at Kirkby Moor Wind Farm, which stands less than a mile outside the Lake District National Park, were installed in 1993. Energy giant RWE wants to replace the turbines with six 115m-high ones – a proposal which was met with objections from conservation groups, environmentalists and councils straight away. The death of a Merseyside diver – fatally choked while working on a German off-shore wind farm – needs an urgent probe, parliament will be told today. Stephen O’Malley’s partner Nicola want answers about how a diving ring – worn around his neck and connected to his helmet – managed to throttle him as he worked on a contracting job, over three years ago. The 48-year-old was wrongly recorded as having died from an undiagnosed heart condition by Danish authorities . . . Read More

Wind farm campaigners near Burnham-On-Sea are celebrating this week after their long-running battle against EDF Energy’s plans came to an end. EDF’s proposals for five huge wind turbines on land just off the Causeway in East Huntspill were originally rejected by Sedgemoor District Council in May this year, but the firm had six months to appeal – and that date passed this week without an appeal being lodged, so the scheme has been dropped. Planning officers at Allerdale council have recommended refusing a wind turbine application because of a number of fundamental issues. David Gate, of Branthwaite Hall, put in an application to build a 79.6m turbine at Winscales because he was anxious to develop a sustainable renewableenergy project to reduce the financial overheads on his farm. He also argued that the turbine’s energy would be used by both the farm and exported and it would also contribute to the Government’s commitment to reduce . . . Read More

The Government has announced a move away from renewable energy as work begins on the £1.3 billion Rampion offshore windfarm. The country will be increasingly reliant on gas-powered plants in the future after it was announced last week all coal stations will close by 2025. Yet with work beginning in earnest on one of Sussex’s largest engineering feats with the 116-turbine windfarm, opponents of the project are asking whether the “blight on our landscape” will be worth it.
